The word “chameleonic” is often overused, but for Sia Furler it seems perfect. Coming to wider attention when her swelling 2004 piano ballad “Breathe Me” scored the closing montage on Six Feet Under’s series finale, the Australian multi-hyphenate evolved into one of pop’s most in-demand songwriters, penning hits for Rihanna, Beyoncé and Katy Perry. Rather than dwell on the sidelines, she came roaring back into focus with her 2014 smash “Chandelier”, a self-fulfilling prophecy about fearlessly seizing the moment. That and 2015’s more subdued “Elastic Heart” showcased the rafter-shaking vocals behind her prized pen, while 2016’s “Cheap Thrills” left no doubt about her superstar potential. But remaining cautious about fame and ever keen to explore, Furler has spent subsequent years dabbling in filmmaking, holiday albums and team-ups in the realms of rap and dance music. After a seven-year drought between proper solo albums, she duetted with the likes of Chaka Khan and Paris Hilton on 2024’s knowingly titled Reasonable Woman, yielding the clubby Kylie Minogue collab “Dance Alone”. Her stylistic trappings may always be in flux, but what’s constant is a sense of manifesting lasting strength and resilience from within.
