When the música mexicana group Nivel (also known as Nivel Codiciado) first broke through in 2020 thanks to their yearning ballad “Adueñarme”, the latest iteration of the genre was still bubbling. Four years later, regional Mexican music is far from regional: It’s a global sensation. The band’s 2024 album, much like the rapidly growing scene, isn't interested in retreading previously touched-on styles. On early tracks like “Adueñarme”, the band sang of love and innocence. On Niveleando Cuh II, the group have matured and developed their songwriting style, exploring all the different avenues and side streets that regional Mexican music is built around. Take “Harley”, featuring Lalo Gone Brazzy, which showcases some of the most complex vocal performances of the band’s career. The song is still based around guitar parts and guitarron, but the group’s deployment of melodies and harmonies is more refined and intentional than ever before. It’s clear they are attempting to expand their audience, too, when they utter some English on “Harley”, declaring that they’re making “next-level music”.
