Though Kehlani shared her fourth studio album, CRASH, in June 2024, she didn’t let summer slip away without delivering on a long-anticipated additional release: The Oakland-bred R&B star expanded her 2019 While We Wait project with the sequel, which she dropped just two months later. Despite its label as a mixtape, the collection pulls out all the stops, cooking up sultry R&B alongside an impressive list of collaborators, like Lucky Daye, Vince Staples, FLO and more. Despite the versatile collection of friends who roll through, Kehlani keeps the vision consistent, offering up soul-pop jams focused on love lust and love lost. On the kwn-assisted “Clothes Off”, Kehlani croons over a knocking drum groove and bed of harmonies. She sings, “I don’t share, I ain’t sharin’/No offence, she ain’t better than me.” It’s towards the project’s end that Kehlani showcases the growth in her approach to her personal relationships. On “First Life”, she posits, “I need to learn to be alone/’Cause how could I know what I want/If I ain’t never been on my own?”.
