Fresh from his win at the XVII International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, the 21-year-old South Korean Seong-Jin Cho makes his debut with a live recording made during the competition. The Op 28 Preludes—played with a poetry that found favour with a jury comprised of Dmitri Alexeev, Martha Argerich, Philippe Entremont, Nelson Goerner and Garrick Ohlsson—are delightfully varied and full of life. The Second Piano Sonata is fleet of foot, commanding and very convincing. This young pianist clearly has something to say, and this impressive first recording raises the curtain on what will surely be an impressive career.
