About Wet Wet Wet

Appearing on a movie soundtrack can give even established bands a career boost. The soulful Scottish pop band Wet Wet Wet already had two No. 1 singles under their belt—a jaunty 1988 cover of The Beatles’ “With a Little Help from My Friends” and the 1991 orchestral ballad “Goodnight Girl”—before nabbing an even bigger hit: their heartfelt, ornate cover of The Troggs’ “Love Is All Around”, from the Four Weddings and a Funeral soundtrack, spent 15 weeks atop the charts. Wet Wet Wet were formed in 1982 by a group of school classmates, including vocalist Marti Pellow, bassist Graeme Clark, drummer Tommy Cunningham and keyboardist Neil Mitchell. The band’s 1987 debut album, Popped In Souled Out, hit No. 1 on the charts on the way to going multiplatinum, setting the stage for two more chart-topping LPs, 1991’s High On the Happy Side and 1995’s Picture This. Although musical trends evolved away from Wet Wet Wet’s debonair pop, the group persevered. In 2018, The Voice champion Kevin Simm joined Wet Wet Wet in place of the departed Pellow—a seamless transition, judging by the blue-eyed soul track “Back to Memphis” and the horn-peppered, easygoing “The Conversation”.
