As dancehall singer Vybz Kartel’s go-to producer during Kartel’s rise to fame in the early 2010s, Rvssian—real name Tarik Johnston—built a pop-chart-conversant strain of the sound. By stripping dancehall to its most essential parts, Rvssian gave vocalists like rapper Kevin Gates and singer Gyptian space to operate. Later, he’d work with Bad Bunny and J Balvin, creating simmering fusion that explored the space between Latin trap, reggaetón and dancehall.
