From the breakout moment of 2019’s “Hit” onwards, rapper Kenny Mason has rarely conformed to easy categorisation or convenient definition. That said, the half-dozen new tracks that make up his 6 EP do manage to maintain a certain consistency throughout. Throbbing bass conjoins the fuzzed-out opener “DARKSIDE” with the R&B-inflected “RICH” and the comparatively more sedate “I GOT”. Following the soul sample intro, “DRACULA” chops its source material into something he can flow double-time over top. After the indecision-wracked “SIDE II SIDE” drops the percussive thrust, it returns with a vengeance on the lascivious and luxe “STACK IT UP” with no less than Project Pat. At the end, Mason tacks on the trio of songs off the self-explanatory 3, released just a few months prior, giving the EP further heft.
