“Who are you calling a kid?” That’s the English translation of the title of this no-nonsense six-track EP. And it’s apt because it showcases two gifted young rappers who have grown up fast. MCs Kavikaar and Saniya MQ—both representing Mumbai’s “empowering” Dharavi Dream Project—team up with bassist Hashbass and seasoned singer-songwriter Ankur Tewari on production. Hijab-wearing Saniya and straight-talking Kavikaar spit out lyrics in Hindi and English about mums, maths, challenges and dreams. It’s powerful stuff that challenges stereotypes and reminds us that youth doesn’t necessarily mean naivety.
