Early Hours can mean a few different things: Are you winding down after being up all night, or are you just rising to meet the sun? For SHYBOI, the New York-based visual artist and producer behind this month’s mix, it was the former. “You’re winding down at the end of the night and still want to shuffle around between bass and silence,” she tells Apple Music. Her selections, an absorbing, transportive mix of dub- and reggae-inspired tracks, reflect what she’s been playing at home recently. “I’ve been exploring the connections of dub throughout electronic music, and how multiple artists interpret that,” she says. Among her favourite cuts are Space Afrika’s recent release “LV”, which she likens to “being washed by the sun”, and Sly & Robbie’s 1999 track “Into Battle”, a showcase of how the pioneering dub duo “transformed rhythms into hypnotic wormholes,” she says.
