Jason DeFord, better known as Jelly Roll, is a Nashville native whose first burst of fame in the early 2010s came from channelling the country influences of his hometown into a Southern-fried hip-hop style. Both as a solo artist and in collaboration with the likes of Haystak, Lil Wyte and Struggle Jennings, he crafts moody narratives in which doubt and self-acceptance achieve a precarious balance. He sometimes taps into rock elements, and he turned heads in a whole different direction by leaning hard into country on his 2022 hit single “Son Of A Sinner”.
