Burlesque (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

The soundtrack for 2010’s Burlesque births collaboration between pop divas Cher and Christina Aguilera, the movie’s two main stars. Blending equal parts Moulin Rouge-style pizzazz and neo-soul à la Amy Winehouse, a larger-than-life cover of Etta James’ “Something’s Got a Hold On Me” sets the tone with Aguilera’s voice breaking in all the right spots under a pounding parlor piano and hard shuffling rhythms. Cher follows with “Welcome to Burlesque,” an enjoyable number with its gypsy fiddles and sultry cabaret tones. After taking on another James song with “Tough Lover” (dig the sassy horns on this one), Aguilera delivers a classic Broadway-inspired performance with “But I Am a Good Girl” before doing justice to Ralph Rainger’s Tin Pan Alley tune “Guy What Takes His Time,” sounding like a studio-enhanced upgrade on Mae West’s version from the 1933 film She Done Him Wrong. Cher puts the power back in the power ballad “You Haven’t Seen The Last of Me” prior to a partial cover of Marilyn Manson’s “The Beautiful People” that curiously bookends.
