With a poeticism befitting her past as a literature student, Ray BLK is one of soul’s most gripping new talents. Her music draws on R&B from both sides of the Atlantic but her words are distinctly British. “My Hood” is a Stormzy-assisted portrait of South London’s grumpy shop staff and greasy breakfasts, while “Baby Girlz ” juxtaposes a troubled story of teenage pregnancy with buttery jazz-rap grooves. It’s only 25 minutes long but Durt’s soulful impact lingers long after the music stops.
