Fifth-season American Idol finalist Chris Daughtry proved that the show could produce a modern-rock singer thriving outside Idol’s pop-centric margins. Eschewing a solo trip to form a band (albeit with his surname providing the moniker), Daughtry’s 2006 eponymous debut became the fastest selling debut rock album in Soundscan history. Lead single “It’s Not Over” opens on lilting melancholy chords contrasted with post-grunge guitar distortion as Chris croons in the controlled, throaty growl that he honed while competing on Idol. The similarly catchy “Home” is an emotional power-ballad with dramatic, sweeping string arrangements and an anthemic chorus. “What I Want” kicks out Nickelback-flavored heaviness with impressive guitar work that sounds equally inspired by Soundgarden and Van Halen.
