After leading his own band, Caltâr-Bateau, and playing for two other groups, Bon Enfant and Mon Doux Saigneur, Alex Burger reached the quarter-finals of Quebec show La Voix in 2020 before releasing his solo debut, Sweet Montérégie, which earned him the ADISQ award for country album of the year in 2021. He returns with a follow-up that is every bit as fun and infectious as the first. Burger’s voice quivers with emotion on whimsical opener “Sainte-Marcelline” as he sings about smoking, drinking and shedding a tear, accompanied by guitar and piano licks that match his fly-by-the-seat-of-his-pants vocal style. “La pente descendante” is a roadhouse rocker that showcases his ability to get down with the best of them. On the softer side, “Ça fait ben l’affaire” is a finger-picking hymn to a friend going through hard times, Burger’s voice brimming with sympathy and offering unconditional support.
