Cass McCombs fully came into his own with Catacombs, a sparsely recorded collection of bedroom ballads brimming with colourful characters and charming lyrical wit. “Dreams-Come-True-Girl” is a quirky country crooner for the lo-fi age, and “The Executioner’s Song” finds surprising dignity in its titular figure while balancing working-class poetry with an unhurried chamber-pop grace. McCombs has tried on a number of stylistic hats throughout his career, but this album finds him at his sweetest and most intimate.
