Drifting toward the darker pleasures of Latin trap, J Alvarez builds much of La Fama Que Camina from relentless bass, rattling drums and rapid-fire bars. Long-time fans will still find a sprinkling of euphoric reggaetón anthems erupting with EDM synths ("Te Necesito") and bouncy tropical ballads shimmering with sun-kissed guitars ("De la Mia Personal"). But even when they're heavy on his lush vocal hooks, Alvarez's excursions into ethereal trap-soul ("Que Ironía") also bristle with snarling rhymes, while the ferociously minimal bangers ("Haters") are thrillingly unlike anything else in his pop-friendly catalogue.
