Until No More - EP

There’s a meditative quality to everything that Maanyung sings. The Gumbaynggirr and Yaegl songwriter and storyteller makes a lasting impression with his thoughtful debut EP, which arrives soon after his Gumbaynggir-language cover of Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” for triple j’s Like A Version series. Collaborating with multi-instrumentalist brothers Thom and Andy Mak, Maanyung incorporates piano, acoustic guitar, cello, backing vocalists, electronics and even boomerangs knocked together like clapsticks. The results feel both current and timeless, which is fitting for songs about the ongoing interplay of nature. Sung in the Yaegl language, the opening “Bilwaali (Home)” highlights how everything and everyone is connected, while the more lush and dramatic “Patterns” takes inspiration from Maanyung observing the dance of wind and sand on coastal Yaegl land. Others are quieter and sparser, like the lullaby-esque title track, while “Don’t Run Away from Hurt” builds in both pace and layers until hitting a thrilling conclusion. This EP announces a major new talent in First Nations music.
