About Plácido Domingo
Spanish tenor-turned-baritone Plácido Domingo has brought classical music to a vast international audience through hundreds of recordings, crossover collaborations and as one of The Three Tenors. Born in Spain in 1941 and raised in Mexico, Domingo worked in his family's zarzuela company and studied at the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City. He made his major operatic debut at the Mexico National Opera in 1959, relocated to Israel for an extended contract in the early ‘60s, and went on to perform an astonishing 150 operatic roles around the world as a Puccini specialist and the generation’s definitive Otello singer. Since the 2000s, Domingo has transitioned to baritone roles, conquering Simon Boccanegra and originating the titular character in Tan Dun’s 2006 opera, The First Emperor. In addition to championing zarzuela and Latin-American art songs, his projects with popular artists like John Denver, Julie Andrews, Harry Connick, Jr. and Idina Menzel have gone multi-platinum, earning numerous Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards and solidifying Domingo’s status as one of opera’s greatest ambassadors.
