Accompanied by drums and stringed instruments, soulful Kurdish storytellers, minstrels and bards sing historical epics, love ballads, religious music and songs performed only in autumn. Stately, emotional and often melancholy, Kurdish music reflects a proud identity distinct from the nations in which most Kurds reside, and increasingly pleads for autonomy.
