A capella music can evoke images of tuxedo-clad choirs, but South African trio The Soil give these layered harmonies a welcome dash of soul, injecting joyful rhythms, syncopated beats and uplifting lyrics that are anything but staisd. The ensemble was initially 25 voices strong but boiled down to a core four by the release of their 2011 self-titled debut. The album was a hit with ecstatic cuts like "Joy" and the beatbox-heavy "Linkomo" and was followed by 2014's triumphant "Hamba Uyosebenza"—a gorgeous, clear-eyed collaboration with the legendary Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
