Just 21 at the time of Dry Food’s release, Ellen Kempner’s studio debut showcases a mammoth talent. Touring through urgent post-punk and hooky indie with a meander through some hazy ‘70s rock, life through the Palehound lens is a long summer of teen angst and twisted affairs. Gloriously distorted guitars twist gracefully through her best, most fragrant work (the juddering “Molly” and life-affirming “Cinammon”), with Kempner manipulated her voice cleverly to create a cast of brattish, doleful storytellers. Fuzzy, feisty and full of life.
