“Everyday I thank God for being Nigerian and coming from where I come, ’cause there is a story and a legacy to be felt after all of this,” street-pop star Seyi Vibez tells Apple Music. For Oshe Naija, our celebration of the sounds of Nigeria, we asked the inventive star to reflect on how his home city and state helped shape his own music—and the impact it’s had on Nigeria’s soundscape. “I speak in my indigenous language, and it’s been transported from my country to another, yet the soul of it is felt and [is relatable],” Seyi Vibez explains. “I travel and see people who don’t understand Yoruba break into tears when they sing the lyrics. It’s surprising. The Yoruba heritage is known for its great music. In my sound, you can tell I really like to [put] people on the dance floor, having a good time—but I also educate their minds as I create this enjoyable tunes. That’s what music is about: enjoyable learning. It’s been here for ages but now we youngins are redefining it. Like Fuji music for instance—we’re bringing it back again.” Here, Seyi’s selected tracks from Tml Vibez, Muyeez, Nerryckole, Billion Solar, Asake, Shallipopi, Rybeena and more. “These are the sounds of my faves that speak to me, and [they] switch up my mood.” Hear something you like?
