Gifted with both a nasty backbeat and a cool sense of swing, Steve Ferrone has no problem shifting gears from R&B to rock and back again. In addition to a string of disco and funk classics from Chaka Khan and Average White Band, his drumming anchors some of the biggest hits of the ’90s, including Eric Clapton’s silkily acoustic “Layla” and Tom Petty’s “You Don’t Know How It Feels,” a gig that led to Ferrone joining the Heartbreakers full-time.
