Joined by the wonderfully rich and expressive mezzo of BBC New Generation Artist Helen Charlston, as well as some other vocal guests, the Fretwork viol consort take us back to celebrate an Elizabethan Christmas. Beautifully programmed to offer a variety of textures, the collection features vocal numbers interspersed with consort music, played with Fretwork’s characteristic classy musicianship and glorious range of colours. After the restraint and fasting of Advent, Christmas was a time of celebration in the Elizabethan era, but also a deeply spiritual occasion with piety ever-present. Charlston’s serene singing, poise and perfect diction make her a superb companion. A delightful album.
