Few genres in Latin music are defined entirely by a single act, but Banda El Recodo embodies the very essence of banda sinaloense. This lush album finds the multi-piece orchestra celebrating 80 years of existence by revisiting its extensive songbook with a gallery of stars—like “Despacito” hitmaker Luis Fonsi, who adds a touch of soulful drama to “Dime Que Me Quieres”, and pop diva Yuri, who puts her classical training in the service of “Tengo Una Ilusión”. The orchestrations are inspired, and El Recodo stretches its boundaries by collaborating with the venerable Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán on a raucous reading of the huapango “El Son de los Aguacates”. But it’s those marquee guests, including Spanish pop star David Bisbal and regional Mexican innovator Gerardo Ortiz, who really put El Recodo’s legacy into perspective, preserving the syncopated panache of the group's classic songs while spinning them for a new generation.
