About Los Angeles Philharmonic

The Los Angeles Philharmonic has built its reputation on forward-looking programming, a sense of community and a knack for spotting prestigious leaders. Founded in 1919, the US orchestra made its mark during the LP era under Zubin Mehta (music director 1962-’78, now conductor emeritus) and Carlo Maria Giulini (1978-’84) before an extra sheen of Hollywood was added by André Previn (1985-’89). During the stewardship of Esa-Pekka Salonen (music director 1992–2009, now conductor laureate), the LA Phil moved into the purpose-built Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles and consolidated its reputation as the country’s most contemporary-minded and innovative orchestra. Continuing a tradition of transformative young talent leading the organisation, Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel, then only in his twenties, was appointed music director, a post he has held since 2009. The LA Phil is noted for its adventurous repertoire, continuing to lead the way with the inclusion of 20th- and 21st-century works on the concert stage, and for its community engagement through programmes such as Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA), inspired by Dudamel’s own musical upbringing.
