The 2010s were fruitful years for pop in France, showcasing the flexibility of the genre as the country’s artists helped to redefine a host of styles. Electro-pop offerings ran the gamut from laidback and melodic, such as Angèle’s “Oui ou non”, to the likes of Black M’s pulsating “Sur ma route”. Meanwhile, Christine and the Queens’ reinvention of indie pop—as heard in the powerfully emotive “Nuit 17 à 52” and “Christine”—propelled her to huge success across Europe. And there was still room for the traditional, too, via Vianney’s moving balladry.
