Carl Craig crested Detroit techno’s second wave, combining sci-fi sounds gleaned from the Belleville Three with influences like Throbbing Gristle and Talking Heads. While early hits released under his aliases 69, Psyche and Paperclip People stoked dance floor mayhem, the ’95 LP, Landcruising, explored new frontiers in home-listening electronica. Craig’s Planet E label changed the course of techno with releases from Moodymann and Recloose, and his collaborators include jazz trombonist Phil Ranelin and Basic Channel’s Moritz von Oswald. His DJ sets continue to wow clubbers worldwide.
