Texas-born singer-songwriter Kevin Morby found his own playful but trenchant voice through disparate North American musical traditions. He mixed the wry deliveries of Lou Reed and Leonard Cohen with folk and psychedelic-rock trappings on formative records like 2016’s Singing Saw. On the 2019 release Oh My God, he surprised fans by offering a secular, art-rock-informed take on gospel (see “No Halo”). Country music became a comfort zone in the 2020s with Sundowner and This Is a Photograph. During this period, Morby and indie-folk luminary Waxahatchee turned in “Farewell Transmission,” a gorgeous revamp of a standard by a spiritual forebear, the late Jason Molina.
