In all its studio overdubs and drum-machine micro-grooves, Fresh contracts the breezy ensemble sound of Sly & the Family Stone's earlier material for an album of pressurised funk and psychedelic soul. Though they weren’t hits, "In Time" and "Let Me Have It All" are some of Sly's most recognisable songs, his elasticised voice ping-ponging between a sparse, syncopated rhythm section, female backing singers and woozy horns. "Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)", their soulful take on Doris Day’s whimsical ballad, is the band's only studio-album cover.
