Richard D James calls this his most “pop” record as Aphex Twin. Certainly, the skittering rhythms and playful structures make room for warm melodies to slide in. While Syro may not be one of James’s scorched-earth re-inventions of sound though, it still reformats techno, acid house and jungle to a thrillingly singular vision exemplified by the dizzying electronic pyschedelia of “XMAS_EVET10 [120] [thanaton3 mix]”. Pop, but not as anyone else knows it.
