A quietly resolute sense of strength pervades the orchestral music garnishing the BBC's historical miniseries. The vocal ensemble Mediaeval Baebes supply the "aleluias" and "glorianas" that punctuate composer Martin Phipps' suitably majestic theme for the teenaged queen. After establishing Victoria's dynamism early on, Phipps handed the composer's baton to Ruth Barrett, who wrote epic and exhilarating incidental music for Victoria's introduction to locomotives and for "The Royal Birth", which starts as an anxious crisis and concludes sublimely.
