Naim Daniel and his World Peace Entertainment labelmates are some of the freshest acts in Malay pop. The singer-songwriter operates both within the local context—ballad-heavy with a religious bent—and also the larger pop world, sounding as modern as international acts but retaining a Malay identity. While fans have long heralded him as the next big thing, his Anugerah Juara Lagu 34 win made it official. But the bigger acknowledgment came from the Institute of Language and Literature (DBP) for his use of Jawi on single “Sembah”—making him one of few pop stars to receive this honour.
