When Skream (aka Ollie Jones) helped usher dubstep into existence in the early 2000s, he was just a teenager. Twenty years later, the London producer and DJ is an elder statesman for dance music’s bass-heavy genres—and he’s the father of a high schooler, for whom he penned the love letter of sorts “Thinking of You”, on which he features his own vocals, giving his son a pep talk. The fact that it’s Skream’s sixth single in 2023 alone suggests he continues to be as prolific as ever, but it also underscores his creative restlessness; in those few releases he’s flitted between clubby house, deconstructed dubstep and drum ’n’ bass, even trance, working with collaborators and baring his own soul on the mic. His set of tunes for Selects—the playlist in which the world’s best producers and DJs share their favourite tracks—might hew to a techno and house tempo, but it's equally wide-ranging. “This is a selection of tracks I’ve been feeling at the moment, plus a few of my own,” he tells Apple Music.
