James Brown's soundtrack debut is a brand new mixed bag of strong songs and coolly jazz-funking instrumental grooves. He was thoroughly in control for "Down and Out In New York City", but wept while recording the tragic "Mama's Dead". Protégé Lyn Collins, meanwhile, knocks "Mama Feelgood" out of the park.
