Black Flag started as a primal, no-frills punk band, but In My Head shows just how much they evolved throughout their career. The tricky rhythms and atonal guitar solos of "Black Love" demonstrate songwriter Greg Ginn's growing interest in free jazz, as he challenges his fans with glee. “Paralyzed” and “Society’s Tease” feel like gauntlet throwdowns with their tortured chord changes and sprawling builds, while the cutting shout-along of "Drinking and Driving" illustrates how sardonic the group was until the very end.
