After moving to San Francisco from small-town Ohio in the late '80s, Mark Kozelek formed the spare, haunting Red House Painters. Their first release on 4AD Records was 1992's Down Colorful Hill, a selection of their early demos. The following year, two untitled albums—known to fans as "Rollercoaster" and "Bridge"—found a devoted following for Kozelek's personal, elliptical lyrics. Leaving 4AD after 1995's Ocean Beach, RHP recorded two more albums, the last released three years after their 1998 split. Kozelek went on to form a new project, Sun Kil Moon.
