Bronx-born, Georgia-raised Money Man is one of the hardest-working artists in rap music. The former Rich Gang affiliate parlayed his success with the Cash Money empire into a dedicated fanbase eager to peep his bi-yearly releases full of catchy melodies and rumbling basslines. The rapper was once most widely known for having bought his music back from Birdman’s label for a quarter of a million dollars, having used earnings from cryptocurrency and album streams to back the deal. But now, he’s widely celebrated for his prolific output and consistency on the mic. Keeping up with all of Money Man’s releases is nearly a full-time job, with the MC having dropped four projects in 2017, seven in 2018, three in 2019, two in 2020, one in 2021 and three in 2022. He greeted 2023 with March’s Red Eye and continued the epic run with the street-ready opus Catch Me If You Can. On the album, Money Man sticks to what works while slowly expanding his sonic arsenal. The beats are minimal with booming drums, woozy synths and plenty of room for his blend of rapid-fire vocals and sticky hooks. On “Ochoa”, though, he surprises with an acoustic guitar sample and vocals drenched in Auto-Tune. It’s this sort of quiet switch-up that makes Money Man such a reliable force in the rap game. His sound is singular and he always sticks close to it, occasionally imbuing variability in his flows and beat selection, keeping each project wholly engaging.
