On the follow-up to 2019 debut album Surrender, Sydney electronic duo Set Mo explore ideas of fluidness and malleability across 13 well-honed tracks—none of which pass the five-minute mark. Despite the focus on dance-floor bliss, there’s a recurring theme of poignant emotional connection, as heard on Sydney-based electro-pop singer Jess Kent’s guest turn on “Out My Mind” and the vocal-led collaboration with Tasmania duo Sumner on “Second Line”. Even more telling is “Choose You First”, built on slower keyboards and ruminative vocals before a proper beat appears after nearly a minute and a half. Yet Nick Drabble and Stu Turner are still dab hands at dreamy house cuts: see “Beat Control”, an absolute standout thanks to its Chemical Brothers hooks and the judicious use of a swaggering vocal sample. This may be an album about flux, but it also shows off the savvy sense of control that Set Me apply to all their creations.
