Full of tough, turbulent songs that seem forever on the verge of falling apart, the third volume of the Texan psychedelic rockers’ collected works inevitably reflects the chaos of the band’s last two years. Snarling, garage-rock covers of Buddy Holly and Solomon Burke punch through the phony crowd noise on the songs from 1968’s Elevators Live!. Two of the band’s final recordings, “Till Then” and “Scarlet and Gold”, reveal the blues roots of the 13th Floor Elevators’ sonic savagery.
