About Héctor Lavoe
Puerto Rican salsero Héctor Lavoe, affectionately known as El Cantante ("the singer"), emerged in 1967 as bandleader Willie Colón's greatest discovery. Lavoe's elastic, soulful delivery popularized salsa beyond its regional roots, even after his death in 1993 at 46.
