Since 1991, when he first appeared on London pirate radio, DJ Zinc—a.k.a. Benjamin Pettit—has pioneered successive strains of UK dance. As a Tru Playaz affiliate, he fused hip-hop and jungle on tracks like 1995’s low-slung “Super Sharp Shooter” and 1996’s funk-fueled “Reachout”. In 1999, his breaks anthem “138 Trek” won over garage crowds; a kind of breakbeat ambassador, he’s since brokered accords between divergent genres with songs like 2010’s “Nexx”, an irresistible example of the hybrid style he dubbed “crackhouse”. Zinc’s wriggly, melodic basslines remain his signature, linking his underground club bangers with his radio-ready drum ’n’ bass anthems.
