Wielded with delicate precision, Ry Cuming’s airy tenor is the common feature across the changing landscape of his work. Raised in coastal Australia and now based outside of Los Angeles, the singer-songwriter and producer known as RY X has moved subtly between rustic folk (2012’s “Howling”) and swirling orchestral flourishes (2019’s “Hounds”). Cuming’s voice sounds purer than ever on 2020’s “Oceans”, an ambient dance track made with Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnalds. His more electronic 2022 album Blood Moon feels similarly open-air, welcoming the influence of the natural world from his mountain-nestled California studio.
