Fronted by James Mercer, The Shins combine gentle harmonies, heartfelt lyrics and shimmering indie guitars to highly melodic effect. Formed in New Mexico in '97, the group signed to legendary Seattle label Sub Pop in '00. But it was their appearance on the Garden State soundtrack four years later that catapulted them into the mainstream, resulting in peak chart success for '07's Wincing the Night Away. After forming side project Broken Bells, Mercer rebooted the group's line-up entirely for '12's Port of Morrow, but continued to enjoy both critical and commercial success.
