On his first solo EP, 2020’s Self-Portrait - The 1st Mini Album, SUHO, leader of the beloved K-pop boy band EXO, channelled Dutch post-impressionist painter Van Gogh, exploring different sides of himself through silky-smooth R&B ballads (“Made in You”) and Coldplay-esque rock songs, strings and all (“O2”). On his second, a lot has changed: After 18 months of mandatory military service in South Korea, he’s returned with a gorgeous guitar-heavy offering. Six capacious tracks create their own world: the anthemic ’90s pop-rock “Morning Star” and “Grey Suit”; a smoky bassline on “Hurdle”; the ’60s slow burn “Decanting”, à la Harry Styles’ “She”. EXO are celebrated for their varied discography, while SUHO’s second solo offering proves he’s got his own surprising sonic interests.
