About Deerhoof
By turns noisy and sweet, Deerhoof have been churning out cathartic indie-rock confections since 1994, proving to be one of the genre’s most enduring institutions. The band got their start in San Francisco when drummer Greg Saunier teamed up with guitarist Rob Fisk for what started off as a harmonica/bass improvisation project. Singer Satomi Matsuzaki joined in mid-1995 and went on her first tour with Deerhoof a week later—even though she’d just moved to the United States from Japan and had never played in a band before. Fisk left the band within a few years, replaced by John Dieterich, and the lineup solidified in time for the band’s Kill Rock Stars-released breakthroughs, 2002’s Reveille and 2003’s Apple O’—oddball opuses that balance chunky, freewheeling guitar-drum workouts with Matsuzaki’s infectious singsong vocals. The band have released more than a dozen albums and EPs since then, and they’ve stayed remarkably consistent all the while, fleshing out their formula with additional guitar heroics and nuanced psych- and prog-rock arrangements while always exuding a sense of frenzied joy.
