The 1970s represents one of the richest eras in Turkish pop music. As the genre edged away from the traditionalism of the previous decade and into more adventurous and experimental territory, a host of exciting new voices were able to break through—while established stars of the day were also eager to reflect new trends. In works by such visionaries as Selçuk Ural, Seyyal Taner and Ajda Pekkan, traditional Turkish song and instrumentation were blended with pop melodies and undulating rhythms, creating a thrilling sound all the country’s own.
