As her moniker suggests, Empress Of’s Lorely Rodriguez is a woman in full control, even when her electro-pop dips into territories unexpected. The L.A.-born singer, songwriter and producer has a voice that hypnotises—especially when she slips in some Spanish—and her voice is what tempers the jungle of jagged beats and woozy, wobbly melodies that dominate her 2015 debut Me and gorgeously flows through the breezy indie pop of 2018’s Us. Though Rodriguez can certainly ignite a dance floor all by herself, she’s proven to be a consummate collaborator too, adding soul and sass to tracks with Khalid, MØ and Dirty Projectors.
