Essential Albums
- A lot has changed for Myke Towers in the nearly four years since his debut album, 2016’s El Final del Principio. For one, música urbana has grown from regional favourite to global movement, earning him some notable hits recently, including “DOLLAR” with Becky G and “Si Se Da” with Farruko, the latter of which features on his sophomore full-length. On a more personal tip, he recently became a first-time father, marking the occasion by having his infant son appear with him on the album’s cover. While Towers could easily have leaned fully into his pop appeal, Easy Money Baby succeeds largely because he refuses to abandon the streetwise skills present on the more aggressive hip-hop singles in his discography to date. He reps hard for Latin trap on heavy hitters like “Ronca” and “Tú”, while still easing into thuggish love mode on the far breezier “La Playa”. On the hypnotic “Relación Rota”, he does reggaetón romantica with a casual flair, and he uproots an interrogatory 50 Cent classic on the instantly memorable “Girl”. That latter cut further broadens the reach of música urbana at a critical time, linking it even closer to the anglophone rap world without compromising on language. In his own words, Towers walked Apple Music through some of his favourites of the 18 tracks on the record. MIB “The first one I’d pick is the first one on the album. It represents musically everything in my career up until now, from where I started, for people that may not understand. It brings colour to the album.” Parcerita “Much of this one was inspired by a woman in Colombia, someone who I loved a lot there. That’s the theme here.” Una Noche Más “This has a certain type of rhythm. It’s meant to present Myke Towers in more of a global context separate from what’s expected from me.” Girl “‘21 Questions’ is one of my favourite tracks. I love 50 Cent. This is one I’m singing for the streets, because a lot of it involves women. If you listen, you’re going to like it.” Funeral “This is the final song—about a relationship that’s ending in a breakup because one person has hurt the other one. It’s key to understanding this record. When you lose someone, you’re still curious about that person, and you feel sad that things are different.”

About Myke Towers
Myke Towers has made himself a star by proving he has range: pop-flavoured reggaetón, Latin trap and African-infused dancehall all seep through. In the mid-2010s, the Puerto Rican wordsmith emerged as a fledgling Latin pop rapper. But when his second crossover album, 2020's Easy Money Baby, debuted at No. 1 on the Latin Albums chart in the U.S., Towers quickly became one of Latin music’s most high-flying talents. Born Michael Torres in 1994 in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico, at a young age he immersed himself in his grandmother’s vast music collection, which comprised Latin American classics like salsa, merengue and boleros. At his own home, he filled his ears with the records of Sean Paul, Ja Rule and JAY Z, which inspired him to begin spitting bars in his late teens. He dropped his debut in 2016, El Final del Principio, a lyrical rap LP that harks back to the golden age of New York hip-hop. And four years later, the reggaetón-infused Easy Money Baby honoured those influences too (lead single “Girl” features a looping sample of 50 Cent's “21 Questions”) and cut them with elements of Brazilian funk and R&B. Tellingly, the album's title expressed a laidback confidence, an acknowledgment of reaching a milestone without breaking a sweat. Superstars including Bad Bunny, Becky G. and Farruko have sought Towers out for collaborations, proving the allure of his ability to bring clever punchlines and lyrical grit to the modern, pop-leaning reggaetón canon while upholding the roots of classic Latin urban.
