Less than a minute into “404 (Intro)” on ELHAE’s debut album, it seems as if the Atlanta-based singer is taking inspiration from the most baroque music in Kanye’s catalog. But it’s a musical misdirect: He soon switches to woozy minimalism, spinning a confessional tale over wan boom-bap on “Hartley Bridge” and delivering a lascivious come-on in the spectral slow jam “Comfortable.” Listeners are left to get willfully lost in low-simmer beats and hazy murmured vocals.
